Most states reclassify a golf cart that can go 20-25 miles per hour as an SMV – slow moving vehicle, and faster than 25 miles per hour means the golf cart has entered regular motor vehicle range and must comply with federal motor vehicle standards.

Guinness World Records lists the fastest speed attained by a golf cart as 118.76 miles per hour. Specifically, the Guinness website says: “The fastest golf cart is the 'Bandit' by Plum Quick Motors, which achieved a speed of 191.12 km/h (118.76 mph) when driven by Robby Steen (USA) at the Darlington Dragway in Hartsville, South Carolina, USA, on 31 October 2014.” Just imagine how fast you could play 18 holes with a golf cart that goes so fast, it seems to be flying. Maybe you could even break the Guinness record for most golf holes played in a day held by Swiss golfer Jurg Randegger who played 252 holes in 12 hours at Ostschweizerische Golf Club in St. Gallen Switzerland. Fun for you for sure, maybe not so much for golf course officials.
Why Was the World’s Fastest Golf Cart Created?
When Carson Steen, founder of Plum Quick Motors in Lancaster, South Carolina with his two sons Ricky and Robby, created the record-setting Bandit golf cart, the aim was to break the trio’s own record set the year before of 103.65 miles per hour. When asked by a local newspaper reporter why they wanted to create the world’s fastest golf cart, Carson Steen answered, “We’re just country folk. We are not smart enough to know what we can’t do,” before getting more serious, adding, “We like to do things nobody else does.”
How Was the World’s Fastest Golf Cart Created?
Providing a specific blueprint for building a golf cart that can reach speeds of nearly 120 miles per hour is beyond the scope of this post. Most of the work took place “under the hood.” Modifications included 80 pounds of lead weights attached to the front bumper for improved stability and racing safety, harnesses for passengers, a motor custom-built by the Steens, a bank of supercharged lithium-ion batteries, and a high-voltage, high-amperage controller. Son Robby the record-setting driver, believes he could have gone faster, perhaps as fast as 130 miles per hour, estimating the cart was only using 80% of the battery power at the peak. But due to a lack of stability at the top speeds, and a prodigious amount of acceleration force, Robby pulled back slightly from going the max, a decision supported by all involved.
