Pittsfield in the Berkshires

Also referred to as the Berkshire Hills, Berkshire Mountains, and Berkshire Plateau, the Berkshires is a popular vacation destination in the rural mountains of western Massachusetts, an extension of the Vermont-based Green Mountains that extend into the state. The town of Pittsfield is known as the heart of the Berkshires and serves as the hub for several of the best snowmobile trails Massachusetts has to offer. The 12,000-acre Beartown State Forest turns into a winter wilderness wonderland when the snow flies, with spectacular views and over 25 miles of snowmobiling trails. Keep an eye open for deer, bear, bobcat, fisher and other wildlife, though the park’s namesake, the Black Bear, hibernates in winter. The October Mountain State Forest provides some prime snowmobiling on its 16,500 acres, as does the Pittsfield State Forest, with over 11,000 acres of mature woods, including Berry Pond, one of the highest natural bodies of water in the state at 2,150 feet in elevation.
The Mount Greylock State Reservation features Mount Greylock, the highest natural point in Massachusetts at 3,489 feet above sea level, which offers spectacular views to five states. This 1,458-acre State Forest includes Mount Grace, the third highest elevation in Massachusetts at 1,621 feet above sea level. Myles Standish State Forest

With over 12,400 acres laced with dirt roads open to snowmobiling, this is the largest public recreation area in southeastern MA. The space offers significant views you’ll love, and rare formations including Pine Barrens, large areas of tall Pitch Pines growing on sandy, infertile soil, and 58 kettle ponds, created by holes left from glaciers with no inlet or outlet and varying water levels.
Kenneth Dubuque Memorial State Park

You’ll find 47 miles of Massachusetts snowmobile trails in this 7,882-acre forest, the seventh largest in MA. There are tons of forest roads and plenty of hills as you enjoy the deep woods scenery. The area has frequent elevation changes of between 200 – 400 feet. And since it’s located just west of the 10,500-acre Savoy State Forest and just south of the 6,547-acre Mohawk Trail State Forest, you’re not likely to have the solitude of your ride disturbed by other snowmobilers. The forest was named in memory of Kenneth Dubuque, a former employee of the Department of Environmental Management.
