As with any vehicle, choosing the right size golf cart tires depends on several factors, like your cart’s make and model, whether your cart has been “lifted” to drive higher off the ground, and your personal taste. The tire experts at Treadworld are here to help you make your best golf cart tire selection, and also take the mystery out of the differing, and sometimes confusing, naming conventions.
How to Read Golf Cart Tire Sizes
Thankfully for golf cart owners, the vast majority of golf cart tire sizes are fairly standard—18 inches to 20 inches tall by 8 to 8.5 inches wide, yet there can still be some confusion when it comes to selecting the right golf cart tire size. That confusion isn’t so much related to knowing the size you need, it’s more in the area of identifying the right size. That’s because the way the tire size is labelled can vary. Some tire sizes are expressed in inches, some in millimeters, and some in both inches and millimeters. Plus, further muddying the waters, naming conventions have changed over the years, so the same tire size may be expressed in varying ways.
Golf Tire Sizes at Treadworld
Here at Treadworld, we try to keep it simple. Our golf cart tire sizes and our lawn and garden tire sizes are denoted by three numbers. For instance, a common golf cart tire size is 18x8.50-10. It’s a more straightforward process when the measurements, as in this case, are reflected in inches. The first number, 18, is the diameter of the tire in inches—the measurement from the top of the tire to the bottom of the tire. The second number, 8.5, is the width of the tire in inches—a measurement across the tire that indicates the size of tire patch that makes road contact. And the last number, 10, is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches—which size wheel will fit the tire. Just FYI, not all tire measurements are that straight-forward. For instance, you may see a tire sized at 205/50-10. In that case, the first number, 205, represents the tire's width in millimeters. The second number, 50, is the tire’s aspect ratio, which is the measurement of the sidewall in relation to the width. And the last number, 10, is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches—which size wheel will fit the tire. A 205/50-10 is equivalent to an 18x8-10 tire Generally, tire sizes are listed on the sidewall. This is true for RubberMaster Golf Cart Tires.
