Florida ATV Trail Guide
When it comes to ATV riding, Florida has a lot to offer thanks to plentiful wildlife and a very diverse variety of landscape. We’ve only highlighted a very few popular Florida OHV areas, but there are many other great places throughout the state for ATV and UTV trail riding adventures. Apalachicola National Forest
Location: FL-12, Sopchoppy, FL 32358 (Florida panhandle, southwest of Tallahassee, FL)
The largest U.S. National Forest in the state at 632,890 acres, Apalachicola offers plenty of adventures for 4-wheeler riding with more than 100 miles of motorized trails, including a 56-mile trail system dedicated to ATV riders and UTV riders. The primarily flat, sand and dirt trails through woodlands are fairly easy-going and great for beginners, with lots of mud bogs when the weather cooperates. You’ll also find fast, long trails with multiple switchbacks and little high speed jumps here.
Big Scrub Recreation Area and the Ocala Adventure Trail
Location: SE 241st Ave, Umatilla, FL
Popular with ATV riders, Big Scrub Campground is located in the Ocala National Forest (see below) offering riders campsite-to-trail access with a trailhead right in the facility. It also provides direct access to the Ocala Adventure Trail, also known as the Centennial Trail, a slow-speed 47-mile loop trail that navigates one of the largest contiguous sand pine scrub habitats in the world. The mostly smooth and
sandy trails weave through forested areas, with plenty of berms and shade trees.
Clear Creek OHV Trails
Location: Blackwater River State Forest, 8348 Redbird Trail, Milton, FL
Despite the name, there is no creek, clear or otherwise, on this 615-acre section of Blackwater State Forest. ATV riders will find 50 miles of trails dedicated to off-roading, ranging from very easy to fairly challenging to suit a wide range of 4-wheeling experience. Trails tend to be sunny and dry, so relatively
rut-free, with outer trails running through areas with more tree coverage. One-way trails are clearly marked and color coded, and there’s a small training track ideal for letting novices get their first taste of ATV and UTV riding.
Croom Motorcycle Area
Location: 6420 La Rose Rd, Brooksville, FL 34602
Despite its name, Croom is not just for motorcycles and has some of the most popular ATV trails and UTV trails in Florida, with 40 miles of trails that weave through the 2,600 acres of pine and cypress forest lands. All told, this area provides outstanding scenic views and some of the best ATV trails in Florida. It’s in the in the Withlacoochee State Forest and offers 4-wheeler riders of all skill levels a variety of terrains, including berms, pits with steep drop-offs, small jumps, and mud bogs on the mostly sand trails. There is also a peewee track for beginners.
Hog Waller Mud Bog and Park
Location: 440 Co Rd 310, Palatka, FL
When you want to get dirty, blasting through mud, come here. Once an old logging community, Hog Waller covers 1,100 acres that include a six-acre mud bog, water crossings and 50 miles of ATV trails that are novice-friendly, and per the name, mostly mud. Many of the trails are 100 years old and have been adapted either from old railroad beds from the Ocklawaha Valley Railroad, or support roads from timber operations of the old Rodman Sawmill from the early 1900’s. Bathing facilities on-site get a lot of use.
Mallory Swamp Trail
Location: Lafayette County, FL. Navigate to Mayo, FL, then take SR-51 south to County Road 360
Part of Mallory Swamp Wildlife Management Area in northeastern Florida, this area includes over 38 miles of mainly loop trails on wide and flat forest land that can get exciting for “mudders” after some rainfall. Though it won’t provide the most challenging ATV and UTV trails, what riders may find very exciting is the wildlife along the way, including whitetailed deer, feral hogs, turkey, limpkins, wood storks and great blue herons.
Ocala National Forest
Location: 3199 NE Hwy 315, Silver Springs, FL
One of the top destinations for off-roading in Florida, Ocala covers 189 miles of trails weaving through its 387,000 acres of sand pine scrub forest. It offers 3 separate riding areas (Ocala Centennial OHV Trail- see above, Ocala North OHV Trails and Wandering Wiregrass Trail) and 8 different ATV trails. The
primarily sandy and flat terrain also provides ATV riders many trees, berms, and some small jumps, along with mud and marsh adventures. The chances for encountering some local wildlife are good and the scenic beauty is often astonishing year-round.
Osceola National Forest
Location: 24874 US-90, Sanderson, FL
This 266,000-acre forest area offers 100 miles of ATV trail riding and UTV trail riding on flat, hardpacked sand pathways that were originally old forest service roads. Many trails zigzag, and many feature water crossings, making this area especially popular with ATV riders looking for some landscape diversity. Experienced riders will find some challenges here, but most of the 4-wheeler trails are beginner-friendly.
The Swamp Off-road Park
Location: 3690 Mobile Swamp Road, Chipley, FL
When you’re in the mood for some serious, deep mud pits, wide, sandy trails, a newly built obstacle course, and fun hill climbs, head out to The Swamp. This family-friendly ATV park offers several miles of trails weaving through its 55 acres, with pathways suitable for a wide range of ATV riding experience, from beginning to expert. Open the first and third Saturdays of each month. Fee required.
Tate’s Hell State Forest
Location: 290 Airport Rd, Carrabelle, FL
With some of the best ATV riding Florida has to offer, Tate’s 2,600 acres provide over 150 miles of mainly flat and hard-packed trails that weave through dense forest swampland, Pine Forest, and black water rivers. Outdoors-folks using the 4-wheeler trails should be prepared for stunning views, along with the possibility of encountering a wide range of wildlife, including wading birds, bald eagles, panthers,
gopher tortoise, black bears, deer or even gator.
